Cheating Policy

By Testing

East Shore Online has a strict policy when it comes to plagiarism or other forms of cheating. Cheating includes but is not limited to; using another person’s work, having another person do your work, using an AI text generator, copying from the internet without correctly citing sources, using notes or devices while taking a final proctored test, and having a browser window open while taking the final proctored test.  It is important to understand continued plagiarism or cheating may result in removal from the class and/or revoked access to East Shore Online.

Students who violate the cheating policy will be subject to the following:

  • First Offense = DC coordinator or teacher verbally warns the student.
  • Second Offense = DC coordinator or teacher verbally warns the student and will notify the student and parent/guardian in an email with ESO Principal cc’d.
  • Third Offense = DC coordinator or teacher verbally warns the student and will notify the student and parent/guardian in an email with the ESO Principal cc’d.  ESO Principal will inactivate the curriculum unit(s) and call a parent/guardian to discuss offense and put a plan in place.
  • Fourth Offense = DC coordinator or teacher verbally warns the student and notifies ESO Principal. ESO Principal will inactivate all curriculum units and contact the parent/guardian. ESO Principal will also contact the student’s school.  Activation in ESO is suspended with possible removal evaluated.

Test Troubleshooting

By Testing
  • Tests can close prematurely for a variety of reasons:
    • The unit expires while the student is in the middle of the test. If this happens, the Submit button won’t appear.
      • To fix, extend the unit until the end of the day and tell the student to wait for the test to refresh on its own. It may take a few minutes. (If the student refreshes the page themself, they will lose their test answers.)
    • If the student clicks off the test to open another window or tab
      • There should not be any other tabs or windows open while the student is testing to help prevent cheating

Terms and Conditions

General Information

  • All final exams must be taken with a proctor.
  • The course must be active. All renewal fees apply.
    • Students DO have until the end of the business day to take a test, so if the unit expires before the end of the day while they are trying to take their test, you may extend the unit until the end of the day so they can take their test without having to pay to renew. See “Manually Extending a Unit” for instructions on how to do this
  • All course work submitted and passing with a 70% or higher in order to test.
  • Once the test is taken, all grades are locked in and no coursework may be resubmitted.
  • Courses are not “Complete” until a student passes a test.
    • They will not receive credit in Skyward until the final test is taken and passed.
  • Exams are closed book and closed notes.
    • For students with IEPs, they will work out accommodations with the proctor and their Special Ed teacher and potentially our director.
  • When needed, students may use translation services on proctored final exams.

Failed Test Retakes

  • Students have a limit of three exam attempts and must wait at least 1 business day between attempts.
    • The purpose of this is to give students the chance to study the material again and to prevent cheating
    • After the third attempt, students will be required to restart the course, although the student may speak with the director to get permission for a 4th attempt.
  • If the student fails, they have up to one school year after last working on it to retest.
  • Unit must be active. All renewal fees are applicable.

Passed Test Retakes

  • When a student retakes an already passed exam for a better score, they must inform the Help Desk so their grade can be manually changed in Skyward. See the article Allowing a Retry on a Passed Exam for more information
    • Please remind proctors and students of this when releasing their exam
  • Students have up to 1 term from when they first tested to retake an already passed exam
    • If it has been longer than one term since they took the exam, they must redo the whole unit to get the higher grade
  • Unit must be active. All renewal fees are applicable
  • Students also only have three test attempts total for retaking a passed exam

Use of Calculators

  • Calculators are permitted on Math and Finance Tests. These MUST be physical calculators, online calculators are not allowed.

Allowing a Retry on a Failed Exam

By Testing
  1. Look up the student in Buzz
  2. Click on Performance
  3. Select the proper course
  4. Scroll down to the bottom and select Final Proctored Test
  5. Click on Submission History and make sure it has been 24 hours since the last test attempt and that the student has not already made 3 attempts
  6. Select Allow Retry by clicking on the circular arrow and be sure to hit Submit Score if it doesn’t save automatically and bring you back to the grades page

Failing an Exam

By Testing

Students have 3 attempts to pass a unit final. They are allowed to make attempts for up to one year since their first attempt. If they fail their third attempt, they have two options:

  • Retake the entire unit
  • Contact the director for permission for a 4th attempt
    • Try to recommend this whenever possible, we never know what circumstances could be preventing a student from passing. Having them advocate for themselves with the director may be beneficial for them.

Students are not able to look at their failed test submission. Instead, encourage the student to contact the teacher and work with them to figure out what went wrong and what they can improve. Please also encourage them to do this before their 3rd test attempt to try and reduce the need for 4th attempts.

Testing Password Error

By Buzz, Testing

Sometimes when a student goes to take a test, they get a message saying they need a password in order to open their test. When this happens:

  • Open a new tab for Buzz
  • Under the Main Menu (three horizontal lines in the top left corner) and select “Courses”
  • Search for the course you need
  • Once you have selected the course (by clicking on the course ID,) go back to the Main Menu and select “Editor” under the course name
  • Open the “Final Test” folder (click on the arrow) and then double click on the final exam (may be called Final Proctored Test)
  • Once you’ve opened the final exam page, select “Settings” at the top
  • Under “Advanced Assessment Options” look for the password option (at the bottom)
  • If a password is listed there, erase it
  • Click “Save” in the top right corner

Grades Page Symbols

By Buzz, Testing
  • Viewing grades is easiest when they are displayed by “Grading Categories” and not “Syllabus Order.” You can make sure they are displayed correctly by selecting the “Grading Categories” button in the top right of the grades page
  • When checking on a student’s grades, you will notice several kinds of symbols appear.
  • Status Symbols:
    • These will appear to the right of the assignment’s score:
A grade in the red means that the assignment is below passing and will need to be redone in order to test (All assignments must be at least a 70% to test)
A grade in green means that the assignment is passing.
The assignment is excused and the student does not need to complete it
The assignment has been opened (it is not complete until it has a passing grade)
A retry has been allowed for the assignment/test
The teacher has left feedback for the student that they can view by accessing their grades page which can give advice on what needs to be fixed in order to pass the assignment
The assignment is waiting to be graded by the teacher. OR, this symbol can also mean that the student has questions left unanswered in the assignment.
  • Activity Symbols
    • These will appear to the left of the assignment name:
The assignment is not included in the final grade but it does still need to be completed before they can test
Assignment is extra credit and does not need to be completed.
Assignment requires a passing score for course credit. (You won’t need to worry about this too much as we require all assignments to have a passing score anyway.)

Exam Requests

By Testing

When a proctor sends a testing chat request:

  1. Check registration date.
    • If it shows it is expired, check in the Shopping Cart to be sure.
    • If the registration is in fact up to date, be sure to update the student’s details page.
  2. Check course end date.
    • If the course has expired, they’ll need to renew it
  3. Make sure all assignments are submitted and have a passing grade of 70% or higher.
    • Teachers have one full business day to grade so students do need to wait for their teachers to grade their assignments before they can test.
  4. Select “Final Test Information” and add 100% grade.
    • You can do this by clicking on “Full Credit”.
    • Be sure to hit “Submit Score” before exiting out.

  2. Click on Performance
  3. Click on Past Courses and select the correct course
  4. Scroll down to the bottom and select Final Proctored Test
  5. Change exam score to “0.”
  6. Select Allow Retry on the exam by clicking the circular arrow.
    1. It will automatically save and bring you back to the grades page.

      1. Student’s name
      2. Student’s ID number
      3. Which specific course and unit they retested in
      4. The unit’s new grade
  10. Please note the following:
    1. Course cannot be past its expiration date so all renewal fees still apply.
    2. Student can only retest within 1 term of the first test attempt
